Not Hired Because of Reverse Religious Discrimination?

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Most people are aware of the existence of religious discrimination in the workplace.  This takes place when an employee is turned down for a promotion or is fired because of their religious beliefs.  It can also happen when a potential employee is not hired based solely on their religious practices, or when a current employee suffers discrimination in the workplace for the same reason.

There is, however, the existence of something relatively new called “reverse religious discrimination”.  This was highlighted with current court cases where the plaintiff claimed that he or she was passed over for promotion because he or she was not a member of the religious organization to which the deciding manager and the promoted employee belonged.  This case not only highlights the existence of reverse religious discrimination, it also allows people to take action against it.
