Job Interviews: The Black Mark on Your Permanent Record

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

When you fill out and application for a job, you need to be sure that everything – absolutely everything – that you put on the application is true.  This is important for every space you fill out on your application, but it is doubly so for the part about any criminal convictions you have.  Disclosing your convictions on the application will further your chances of getting that initial interview.  Because once you are in the interview, you don’t want to risk your primary disclosure.

Anyone who has a criminal conviction knows that this will always make it more challenging to get a job.  However, if you are not honest about it on the application and then address it secondarily in the interview, you will never get hired.  Saving your mention of criminal conviction for the interview almost guarantees you won’t be hired, simply because it makes you look dishonest to not have listed it on the application.
